However, some institutions may refer to PhD students as “Doctoral students,” “Graduate students,” or even “ Postgraduate students .” It is important to check with your institution to see what term they prefer.

(The latter is the infamous all-but-garment status of a PhD candidate .) A PhD candidate has completed all of the required coursework as well as their dissertation. A PhD candidate is someone who is working on a doctorate. Most PhD students, on the other hand, complete their degrees full-time because there are very few PhDs completed on a part-time basis.
