Doctoral Degrees

The Bloomberg School’s doctoral degree programs target students with specific career goals in public health research, teaching or leadership, and typically require a longer time commitment. We offer three different doctoral degree programs.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

In the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree program at the Bloomberg School, students focus on the creation of new and innovative knowledge – it’s primarily a degree for individuals with goals in public health research or teaching. Generally, the program consists of one to two years of full-time coursework, followed by two to five years of full-time, independent research. PhD programs are based within individual departments, so students should explore and contact their department of interest for more information.

Doctor of Public Health (DrPH)

The Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree program at the Bloomberg School is designed for the student who already has an MPH or equivalent degree and who intends to pursue a leadership position as a public health professional.

Through the integration and application of a broad range of knowledge and analytical skills in leadership, policy, program management and professional communication, coupled with preparation in a specific public health field, graduates of the DrPH program are prepared for either domestic or international careers in public agencies or private sector settings that emphasize improving population health.

USM Master of Public Health Online Program Earns National Ranking

The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) Master of Public Health online program has been rated among the nation’s best in rankings released by education resource guide Edumed.org. USM is the only Mississippi college or university ranked among the top-50 in the Best Online MPH Programs for 2024.

“This type of recognition goes to the heart of public health at USM,” said Dr. Vickie Reed, Assistant Director, Public Health and MPH Graduate Coordinator. “We have great students and faculty, and this recognition honors their academic, research, and service contributions to our public health discipline and profession.”

USM’s Master of Public Health Program provides students with academic skills, practical experience and multidisciplinary study that will enable them to meet 21st century public health challenges. Public Health is a science protecting and improving the health of communities. This work is achieved by promoting healthy lifestyles, and detecting, preventing and responding to both chronic and infectious diseases.

Public health practitioners promote healthcare equity, quality and accessibility while working to decrease health disparities. USM’s Master of Public Health degree is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). CEPH is the national accrediting body for programs in Public Health.

There are currently 111 students enrolled in USM’s MPH Program, with 65 enrolled in the online program. The online program consists of two emphasis areas – Health Policy & Administration and Health Promotion Health Behavior. Ninety-six students graduated from the MPH program during the 2022-23 academic year.

Reed takes particular pride in USM’s program being the only Mississippi college or university included in the rankings.

The master’s in public health at UF offers a 48-credit curriculum for individuals who want to work in research or within the community health field.

Students can choose to pursue their degree at UF’s Gainesville campus or through online learning. Distance learners do not need to fulfill any on-campus requirements. They watch prerecorded lectures on their own time and take proctored exams online.

Core courses cover statistical methods, epidemiology, and the U.S. healthcare system. The curriculum also requires a public health internship for 3-6 credits and an integrated learning experience or capstone project. Online degree-seekers can choose from two concentrations: public health practice and behavioral health sciences. In addition, students can choose to enroll in a 42-credit MPH program for health professionals who already hold a terminal degree within their field.

University of California – Berkeley

The Format: Flexibility That Fits Your Experience, Your Life, and Your Goals

The School offers two variants of the MPH degree designed to fit the needs of students with different educational goals and varying levels of professional experience and prior education:

• The MPH in epidemiology is a hybrid online/on-campus program completed part-time over two years.
• The MPH generalist is a fully online program completed part-time over two years.
• The clinical effectiveness field of study offers a summer-focused option in addition to the full- and part-time options.
• Most fields of study offer part-time options completed over two to three years to some students.
• The 65-credit MPH (MPH-65) is for individuals with a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of contiguous full-time work experience in an area relevant to public health by the time of matriculation. While internships and work experience obtained during your undergraduate degree program are valuable, these do not count towards the required two or more years of contiguous full-time work experience. You can complete this full-time program in three semesters with a summer practicum experience between the second and third semesters. Part-time options are available to some students.

Cost of Studying MPH in Russia

Pursuing a master’s degree in Russia will cost you about $2,100 at the minimum. At some private institutions, you may need to pay $4,000 a year – which is still cheap compared to most foreign universities.

Just as affordable as the tuition fee is the cost of living. You only have to spend anywhere from $300 to $400 a month to live comfortably in Russia.

Requirements to Study Master’s in Public Health in Russia

Most Russian universities only require the completion of a 4-year bachelor’s program to be admitted. However, preference is given to applicants with backgrounds in public health, biology, and other sciences. In schools such as Sechenov University, an entrance exam may also be required.

UW School of Pharmacy Launches Health Technology Assessment Certificate Program

The University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy in the College of Health Sciences has launched a new certificate program aimed at providing practicing pharmacists, other health professionals and health information technology personnel in other related fields advanced training in health technology assessment.

The certificate program, titled “A New Start in Health Technology Assessment,” is delivered completely online, offers 20.5 contact hours and allows those enrolled to proceed at their own pace. There also are two group sessions presented on Zoom when participants can compare progress and engage in learning discussions.

One of the challenges facing the modern pharmacy industry is the need for additional training of pharmacy professionals who will then have the capability and ability to apply standardized scientific assessments of medications, cost evaluations and even measurements for successful marketing efforts. UW’s School of Pharmacy is a fully accredited Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education provider of continuing professional education.

Pharmacy professions that will benefit from this new certificate program include pharmacists interested in applying health technology assessment to medications; industry managers and other employees in areas of economics, measurement and clinical trials; those in areas related to mediation discovery, assessment and marketing; people in pharmacy education areas; and health economists.

Elliott Sogol, director of postgraduate and continuing education in the School of Pharmacy, says the new program will give those who complete the training a “new lens” to look more clearly at standards for product assessments and applied physical and social sciences such as education, psychology and economics.

“We are excited to offer our first certificate program and look forward to the feedback we receive from participants,” Sogol says. “Their feedback will help us in developing additional certificate programs in the future.”

In addition to the two online group sessions, the new certificate program is presented in three parts: required evidentiary standards for product and therapy assessment; the failure of approximate modeled information for therapy decisions; and formulary submission value claims and protocols for a new start in product evaluation. Each part is broken up into several modules.

Dr. Russell "Skip" Barbour - Dr. Russell "Skip" Barbour is the former Associate Director for Research Methods and Analysis at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS (CIRA). He currently serves as a faculty member within Yale's School of Public Health (Biostatistics) and was previously the Co-Director of Data Management and Statistical Analysis at CIRA. He earned his PhD from Yale University in Human Ecology.

Dr. Ajay Rangaraj - Dr. Ajay Rangaraj is a practicing physician and a consultant to the department of HIV, Hepatitis and STIs at the World Health Organization, Geneva. He played a pivotal role in developing the current WHO guidelines for treating HIV and communicating that information to world governments. Dr. Rangaraj is also a graduate of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, with a MSc in Public Health. He is the primary creator of the Public Health Major.

Dr. Charles Severance,  University of Michigan  - Dr. Charles Severance holds a PhD in Computer Science from Michigan State University. He is the former Executive Director of the Sakai Foundation, and one of the world’s leading online CS educators. His contributions and curriculum form the basis of our programming curriculum
